Hi Reader,
Do you ever feel like you’re speaking a different language than your team? Like your vision isn’t translating into action, or you’re constantly putting out fires instead of driving growth?
The issue might not be your team—it could be that you haven’t clearly defined what kind of leader you are.
The Three Leadership Archetypes
Most business owners and leaders fall into one of these categories:
The Visionary sees big opportunities and paints compelling futures, but struggles to break down grand ideas into actionable steps their team can execute.
The Practitioner has deep expertise and maintains high standards, but has trouble delegating and stepping back from day-to-day operations to focus on growth.
The Reactor stays flexible and responsive to every request, but lacks clear boundaries and strategic direction, leading to burnout and confused team expectations.
A Quick Self-Assessment
Ask yourself:
- When you think about your business in five years, do you see specific outcomes or exciting possibilities?
- Do you regularly jump into tasks others could handle?
- How often do you say no to potential clients or projects?
- Do your employees frequently ask for clarification about expectations?
Your answers reveal your natural leadership style—and more importantly, where you might be creating confusion for your team.
The Solution Isn’t to Change Who You Are
The most effective leaders don’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, they understand their natural tendencies and build systems that leverage their strengths while addressing their blind spots.
Visionaries need to create processes for translating ideas into action and consider partnering with operations-focused team members.
Practitioners need to develop delegation skills and invest in leadership training that helps them trust others with their standards.
Reactors need to establish clear criteria for evaluating opportunities and create systems for proactive strategic planning.
Your Next Step
Understanding your leadership style is just the beginning. The real transformation happens when you align your role, expectations, and systems with who you naturally are as a leader.
